Getting Your First 10 App Reviews (Without Begging or Bots)
Zero reviews kills conversion. Five reviews unlocks it. Going from zero to ten is the highest-ROI marketing move you'll make. Here's how to do it in a morning, with the channels that actually convert.
The most underestimated number on a Play Store listing is the review count.
Zero reviews makes the app look abandoned. Even if the screenshots are great and the description is strong, no reviews kills install conversion. Visitors assume nobody uses it, and they don't want to be the first.
Five reviews changes the entire dynamic. The app looks legitimate. Visitors who were on the fence install. Ten reviews helps Play Store ranking. Past 50, the marginal value of each new review drops sharply.
Going from zero to five is the single highest-ROI move in your launch. Here's how to do it in a single morning.
Why review count matters more than star rating
The intuition most people have is wrong. The thing that converts isn't a 5.0 average; it's the existence of any meaningful number of reviews at all.

The best single channel for early reviews, by a wide margin: DM swaps on Reddit, specifically in r/googleplayconsole and r/AndroidClosedTesting.
The mechanic: people post review-swap threads. They have an app, you have an app, you both leave each other a review. The conversion rate is high because both sides are explicitly there for the trade.
A real morning of running this: zero to ten-plus reviews in roughly three hours, all from DM swaps in those two subreddits. Compared to every other channel tried, the gap was enormous.
The DM that converts
Don't overthink the message. Short, direct, leads with the offer:
Hey, saw you in a review swap thread. I've got an app on Google Play, would appreciate a review and I'll do the same for yours right away with screenshots. [link] Send me your link and I'll get on it immediately.
Three things make this work:
"Right away with screenshots." Promises a real review (with screenshots in the actual review text), not just a star tap. People who've done this before can tell.
"Send me your link and I'll get on it immediately." Removes friction. They don't need to compose a pitch back.
Sent within minutes of them posting in the swap thread. Late replies miss the window. The first three or four DMs after a swap post get the reciprocation. The tenth one gets ignored.
Channels that look promising but don't deliver
Two surprises from running this process across multiple apps.
Email to your closed testing group. You'd think this would be a goldmine. They already have the app installed. They've been using it for two weeks. Asking them to leave a review is a one-step ask.
In practice, the conversion rate was roughly one review per hundred testers emailed. Most people who tested don't care enough to review. They tested because they swapped. Now that the swap is over, they've moved on.
It's worth doing because it costs nothing, but don't expect volume from it.
Posting in r/androidapps or r/SideProject. These subreddits are great for visibility but bad for review acquisition. Posts that read like "rate my app please" get downvoted. Posts that share a story about the build, with the app linked at the bottom, get better engagement but still rarely convert to reviews.
If you want to use these subs, post for awareness, not reviews.

The in-app review prompt is worth installing once and forgetting about. The Play In-App Review API has a quota (Google limits how often the prompt can show), but a steady trickle of reviews from real users is exactly what you want long-term. Trigger it after a meaningful moment, the user just completed their main action, not on app open.
The things to avoid
Two patterns that backfire:
Asking for 5 stars in the listing description. Google's policy forbids this. If you're caught, the listing gets penalized.
Mass review swaps from the same IP or new accounts. Google's spam filters catch suspicious clusters: rapid swaps from accounts created the same week, multiple reviews from the same device, identical phrasing. Reviews flagged this way disappear and don't count.
The DM swap method works because it produces real reviews from real Google accounts that have history and reach back to actual devices. That's not gameable. The shortcuts that promise to scale this further (review farms, fake accounts) get caught.
What to do after the first ten
Once you're past ten reviews, the acquisition strategy changes. The DM-swap velocity drops naturally because you've already saturated the obvious threads. The next ten and beyond come from:
- The in-app review prompt running passively in production.
- Asking happy users in support DMs. Someone who emails you a compliment and a question is the highest-conversion review ask in your funnel.
- Time. Review counts compound slowly with installs. If your install count is climbing, reviews follow at a roughly fixed ratio.
You don't need to keep doing the DM grind past the first ten. It's a launch tactic, not a growth tactic.
The honest framing
Review acquisition feels gross to most indie devs. It feels like begging.
The reframe: you're not asking for a favor. You're trading. They have an app that needs reviews; you have an app that needs reviews. The DM swap is a peer exchange, both sides leave honest reviews of working products.
The first time you run this, it'll take three hours and feel awkward. The second time, it'll take an hour and feel routine. By the third app, it's a checklist item on launch day.
The thing that will not happen: a perfectly designed app with zero reviews getting organic traction. Conversion stays broken until the social proof appears. Going to find it on day one is part of shipping.
