Keep Your Agent on Current Docs: MCP and Context7
A recurring frustration with coding agents: they generate code for an API version that no longer exists. A hook renamed two majors ago, a structural directive that became default a year back, a library pinned to a version that doesn't match your install. It compiles in the model's head and breaks in yours.
Why it happens
Two reasons, and neither is really the model being dumb.
- Training lag. The model's knowledge has a cutoff. Frameworks ship breaking changes constantly, and the model defaults to whatever it saw most during training, which is usually the old way of doing things.
- Library lag. Sometimes the dependency itself hasn't kept up. The AI suggests the version with the most examples online, not the one compatible with the rest of your stack.
The result is the same: confident, outdated code, and you doing the version archaeology to fix it.
The fix: give it the docs
The durable fix isn't prompting harder, it's feeding the agent the current documentation through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Context7 is an MCP server that serves up-to-date, version-specific library docs and examples straight into the agent's context. Instead of trusting its training, the agent reads the real API for the version you're actually on.
Practical setup:
- Add Context7, or your framework's own MCP server, to your agent. More framework authors are now shipping official MCP servers for exactly this reason.
- State your versions explicitly in
AGENTS.mdorCLAUDE.md: "We use Next 16, React 19, Tailwind v4. Read the docs before writing, don't rely on training." - When something still looks off, paste the actual API reference and have the agent rewrite against it.
What it means for you
This is one of the cheapest reliability upgrades you can make. A type checker catches outdated APIs at build time; an MCP docs server stops them being written in the first place. Together they kill a whole category of "why doesn't this method exist" bugs.
